My Oldest Son a Few Days After His Birth

“When you are ready–and please take your time–start to find some movement in your physical body, starting with small gestures and increasing your movements. Close your eyes and let your body lead you in the way it wants to become more fully present to enter the world; and when you feel you have moved enough, I invite you to roll over onto whatever side is calling to you and curl up in a fetal position.”

That’s my standard verbiage and cue at the end of a yoga class as I guide my students out of savasana and back into the world.

I often link the fetal position–our “original position in life,” as I called it–to whatever my focus is. For example, if the focus and meditation are on the topic of resilience, I might mention how resilient they were when they started walking: Take a step or two and fall. Get back up and try again… and fall. Have a temper tantrum, but get back up and fall.

In a recent Holy Yoga class, as we were meditating on prophecies of the Messiah, and at the end of the class, the Spirit nudged me to call to mind Jesus’s being curled up in Mary’s womb for nine months. This cue wasn’t planned, but it’s amazing when you are grounded in the Spirit, how He shows up!

To watch my students lying on their sides, curled up in their original position in life, pondering Emmanuel–God in the flesh–curled up in His mother’s uterus was a beautiful thing. As I prayed over them before our session ended, I watched them slowly open their eyes and just utter exclamations of “wow.”

We Christians hear the Christmas story every year in church, and we know all about no room at the inn, the manger, the shepherds, and the three wise men.

But have you ever REALLY pondered God–the Creator of all things–being curled up in His mother’s womb?

Mary FELT Him move.

If this had happened today, she would have heard His heart beat and she would have seen Him move on a sonogram.

Imagine: God, the author of ALL of this, with a beating heart and moving around. A vast departure from the Spirit hovering over the waters, as depicted in the beginning of the book of Genesis.

Mind-blowing stuff we believe in faith.

As you observe Advent this year, spend time thinking about this: God came to earth in the flesh as a baby who grew in Mary’s womb. The handmaiden of the Lord rubbed her increasing girth in faith, knowing she was carrying the Savior of the world.

Mind-blowing and awesome.
